CAIR Action Alert #685:
Volunteers Needed for CAIR/ADC Get-Out-the-Vote Phone Banks in DC, VA
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/31/12) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) will co-host two get-out-the-vote (GOTV) phone banks this Saturday and Sunday, November 3 and 4, in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia to encourage Arab-Americans and Muslims to vote on November 6.
Volunteers are being asked to bring their cell phones to make calls as they reach out to Arab-American and Muslim voters in Northern Virginia.
These events are non-partisan and will not favor one candidate, party or affiliation over another.
CAIR and ADC will provide a 30-minute training on non-partisan phone banking prior to each event. Volunteers will be provided a calling list of registered voters as well as a call script.
On Saturday, November 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., CAIR and ADC will co-host a GOTV phone bank at ADC's national headquarters. Snacks will be provided to those who participate. The ADC office is located two blocks from Farragut North, Dupont Circle and Farragut West Metro stations.
On Sunday, November 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., CAIR and ADC, in partnership with the Virginia American Muslim Civic Coalition (VAMCC), will co-host a GOTV phone bank at the Dar Alnoor Islamic Center at 5404 Hoadly Road, Manassas, VA 20112.
Last week, CAIR called on imams and khateebs nationwide to use the prayers marking the Eid Al-Adha holiday at the end of the pilgrimage to Mecca to urge every eligible Muslim voter to go to the polls on November 6 and vote for the candidate of their choice.
CAIR also released a poll of registered Muslim voters. The poll, conducted by an independent research firm, indicates that 91 percent of registered Muslim voters plan to go to the polls on November 6. The survey indicates that 25 percent of American Muslim registered voters are still undecided about who to vote for in this November's presidential election.
As part of its non-partisan election activities, CAIR has distributed "MVP - Muslim Voter Power" get-out-the-vote posters and lawn signs designed to mosques and other Islamic institutions nationwide. CAIR has also acquired a national list of registered Muslims voters and its chapters around the nation are currently conducting non-partisan efforts to turn out those voters in November.
CAIR provides the community with voter guides that provide information on presidential candidates, as well as data on times polls are open and what to take with you when you vote.
CAIR uses the Twitter hashtag "#MuslimsVote" for updates on election issues and get-out-the-vote efforts.
CAIR has partnered with ADC as part of its efforts to empower minority voters. CAIR is encouraging supporters to join ADC's voter protection unit.
ACTION REQUESTED: If possible, register online at each phone bank’s Facebook page (Saturday in Washington, D.C. or Sunday in Manassas, VA) by indicating that you are “joining” or “going” to the event. Also, invite your friends to either event by sharing it through Facebook, Twitter or email.
