CAIR-WA Welcomes FBI Decision to Join Probe of Anti-Muslim Vandalism
(SEATTLE, WA, 9/20/2012) -- The Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) today welcomed the FBI's decision to join the investigation into hate graffiti, including the slurs "sand n**gers," "doon [sic] coons," scrawled earlier this month on a rental vehicle used by a group of Seattle-area Muslims on a vacation trip to Chelan, Wash.

[NOTE: "Sand n**ger" is a slur used to target those perceived to be Muslim or Arab-American. "Doon coon" is an apparent reference to the stereotypical belief that all Muslims originate in deserts, therefore the misspelled reference to "dunes."]

Last week, CAIR-WA called on the FBI to add its resources to the investigation. CAIR-WA had earlier requested that law enforcement authorities investigate the vandalism as a hate crime.

The Muslims believe the hate incident may have been triggered by a group prayer offered in a public area and the Islamic head covering (kufi) worn by one of the vacationers.

The results of the FBI investigation will be released when it is completed. Agents are still interviewing the victims of the crime.

"We welcome the FBI's intervention in this case and hope that the investigation can be completed quickly," said CAIR-WA Civil Rights Coordinator Jennifer Gist. "The community needs to know that these offenses will be taken seriously and the perpetrator will be brought to justice."

The vandalism is one of many recent crimes committed against American Muslims in the Northwest, and around the country.

Earlier this week, CAIR's national office issued a preliminary report on a spike in anti-mosque incidents that occurred in late August following a massacre of Sikh worshippers in Oak Creek, Wis.

The report noted that in the 13-day period between August 6 and August 18, there were eight incidents in which Muslim places of worship were targeted. As a comparison, in the first seven months of 2012 there were 10 such incidents.

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
