CAIR Asks Muslims to Engage White House Staff on 'Big Block of Cheese Day'

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/29/14) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on American Muslims to engage White House staffers during today's online "Big Block of Cheese Day."

White House officials will be on social media to answers questions in real time on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, and Google+ Hangout.

"Big Block of Cheese Day" traces its origins to February 22, 1837, when President Andrew Jackson opened the White House to the public to engage with cabinet members and staff and to cut a slice from a 1,400 pound block of cheese.

CAIR is asking Muslims to join the Twitter discussion of state and local issues from 2:30 - 3 p.m. ET with Director of Intergovernmental Affairs David Agnew (@DavidAgnew44) and the foreign policy discussion from 3 - 3:30 p.m. ET with Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes (@Rhodes44) and National Security Council Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden (@NSCPress). On the La Casa Blanca Facebook page, Muslims are asked to join the discussion of immigration issues at 3:30 p.m. ET with Director of the Domestic Policy Council Cecilia Munoz.

"We urge American Muslims to take advantage of this opportunity to engage administration officials on issues of importance to our community and to the larger society," said CAIR Government Affairs Manager Robert McCaw.
