Family, Community Leaders to Respond to DOJ Report on Mich. Imam's Killing

(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 10/14/10) –- Later today (October 14), the family of Imam LuqmanAmeen Abdullah and community leaders will hold a news conference in Detroit to offer their response to a report released yesterday by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)Civil Rights Division that exonerated FBI agents in the fatal shooting of Imam Abdullah last October.

The family of Imam Abdullah and a number of organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union - Michigan (ACLU-MI), the Council on American-Islamic Relations -Michigan (CAIR-MI) and the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, yesterday spent some three hours with U.S. Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez making specific inquiries into the process and results of the DOJ review.

"Based on our meeting with U.S. Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez yesterday, a number of questions and concerns remain unaddressed," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. "The family of Imam Abdullah and civil rights advocates will raise some of these concerns and announce the next steps in seeking clarification and remedies regarding the actions of the FBI that led to the fatal shooting."
